Eight things to consider when applying for your first CEO role

Monday, December 1, 2025

Applying for a CEO role for the first time can feel daunting. Even if you’re a strong candidate, navigating the recruitment process requires focus and strategy. Here are eight practical tips to help you stand out and increase your chances of success.

1. Be strategic in your job search

  • Target roles and organisations that align with your experience and values.
  • Review the person specification carefully - missing one or two criteria is usually acceptable.
  • Avoid roles where you lack several key qualifications; focus on positions where you can make a strong case.

2. Tailor your CV for leadership impact

  • Highlight achievements and results, not just tasks.
  • Emphasise leadership experience, strategic impact, and outcomes.
  • Keep it concise. Two pages is ideal, three maximum.
  • Convert to PDF and give it a clear title (e.g., “Jane Doe CEO CV”).

3. Research thoroughly

  • Understand the organisation’s mission, strategy, and challenges.
  • Review the full application pack and any public materials (annual reports, strategy documents).
  • Consider a pre-application call with the recruiter to ask targeted questions.

4. Follow the application instructions

  • Complete all questions fully and stick to requested formats.
  • Don’t include unrelated information - make it easy for the recruiter to assess your application.
  • Always attach your CV if requested; missing elements can lead to disqualification.

5. Use strong, relevant examples in interviews

  • Focus on experiences that demonstrate leadership, strategic thinking, and mission impact.
  • Align examples to what the organisation needs right now.
  • Take a moment to collect your thoughts if a question is phrased differently than expected.

6. Be authentic

  • Demonstrate your true leadership style and values.
  • Don’t try to be someone else. Fit matters as much as skills.
  • Being honest about your strengths and gaps helps both you and the organisation.

7. Take feedback seriously

  • Seek feedback after unsuccessful interviews.
  • Use insights to refine applications, CVs, and interview approaches.
  • Treat each experience as part of a learning process.

8. Practice and persevere

  • First-time CEO applications are competitive; don’t be discouraged by setbacks.
  • Each application and interview is a chance to improve.
  • Patience, preparation, and persistence are key to success.”
