Job description

The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields (https://www.connection-at-stmartins.org.uk) is a registered charity based in the heart of London, near Charing Cross Station and Trafalgar Square. The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields (CSTM) has been helping homeless people since the First World War and is one of London’s largest homelessness charities. CSTM helps 4,500 people each year through its services for rough sleepers and people who are vulnerably housed.

CSTM has an annual turnover of over £4m, a staff team of 100 and around 30 regular volunteers. The fundraising team raise £2m a year and the charity benefits from the BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal, run by our partner - the St. Martin’s Charity and our sister charity the Friends of the Connection, with its 800-strong network of members. This gives CSTM a high profile and a sound financial footing.

Having enjoyed a long period of continuous leadership, the charity appointed a new Chair in December 2016 and a new CEO in April 2017 to take the Connection into its next phase of development. At a time of rising homelessness there are exciting opportunities for CSTM to be innovative, pioneering and ambitious in its work.

We are now looking for up to four additional Trustees who share our passion and commitment and who have the skills, knowledge and experience to support excellent governance and oversight of our newly emerging strategy.  We welcome applications both from those who have previous direct experience of Board level governance and those who do not.

The role is unpaid but immensely rewarding in terms of the positive impacts of CSTM’s work on people’s lives.

Role of the Trustee

Key responsibilities of the Trustees of CSTM are:

•                    Working with the Board to promote the vision and values of CSTM and enhance its profile

•                    Contributing actively to giving CSTM  strategic direction, setting overall policy, defining goals and evaluating performance against agreed targets

•                    Exercising expert judgement and scrutiny for CSTM, contributing fully to Board meetings and sub-committees to ensure excellent governance

•                    Participating in decision-making, risk management and control to protect the charity, its clients, staff and volunteers

•                    Exercising integrity, creating a culture which helps to achieve the charity’s core purpose and ensure public trust and confidence in the charity

•                    Supporting the Chief Executive and wider senior team, where appropriate.

Trustee meetings are held up to eight times a year, usually at CSTM’s premises in Trafalgar Square and in the late afternoon/early evening. A strategy away day takes place once a year. Trustees may also be invited to participate in one of the Board’s sub-committees and from time to time in working groups involving the broader St Martin’s community. 

Qualities required

We welcome applications from candidates with the relevant skills and expertise to undertake the role effectively, who have an interest in and understanding of the trends, issues and environment for homeless people and rough sleepers in central London and who are eligible to act as a charity trustee. 

We are particularly interested in candidates who have a background in any of the following:

·         Organisational change and development

·         Fundraising

·         Finance and Accounting

·         Property

·         Social Enterprise

·         Communications and Influencing

·         Governance best practice
