Job description

Trustee
Home Based (with travel to London for meetings)

About Us

Animal Free Research UK is the leading charity working towards a world where human diseases are cured faster without animal suffering. By pioneering excellence, inspiring and supporting scientists and influencing change, we are improving medical research and putting an end to animal testing.

By 2040, we aim to transform medical research and regulation in the UK so that the development of treatments for human diseases can be entirely animal free and breakthroughs can be achieved faster.

To help us achieve our ambitious goal, we are looking for three Trustees to join us for a three year term, which has the potential to extend for a further three years.

The Rewards

- Out-of-pocket expenses paid
- Join an award-winning team
- A full induction to bring you up to speed
- Help us work towards a world that’s free of animal research

If you are a high calibre professional with a background in a scientific, HR or legal discipline, this is an exceptional opportunity to support the success of a charity that places ethics at the heart of science.

You will have the chance to shape and influence the direction of our charity over the next three years and support us in ending animal suffering and transforming the way in which disease is combatted.

Whether you are an experienced Trustee or are looking to take your first step to Board level, if you have the drive and expertise to help us increase our reach and impact, we want to hear from you.

The Role

As a Trustee, you will support Animal Free Research UK to transform medical research and regulation in the UK.

It’s expected that you will be required to attend a minimum of four Board meetings in London (on Saturdays) and an annual strategy day. The Board usually meets in January, April, July and October.

If you choose to join one of our sub-committees, you will be required to attend four additional meetings (via conference call) per year. You will also be invited to attend charity events and recruitment panels on an ad-hoc basis.

Working in partnership with our other Trustees, you will:

- Ensure that we are carrying out our purpose for the public benefit
- Support the governance of our organisation
- Make sure that our resources are being managed responsibly
- Always act in the charity’s best interests
- Comply with statutory accounting and reporting requirements

About You

We are seeking Trustees with the following:

- A scientific background OR senior level experience in HR or law
- Be passionate, engaged and eager to support our charity
- Be aligned with our ethos

Please note, to be considered for this position, you must not have previously been disqualified under the Charities Act.

Other organisations may call this role Board Member, Charity Trustee, Director, CEO, Chief Executive Officer, MD, or Managing Director.

You may have previously worked as a HR Director, Human Resources Director, Partner, Legal Partner, Lawyer, Barrister, or Head of Governance.

The closing date for applications is the 13th March 2020, with interviews scheduled to be held on the week commencing the 23rd March 2020 in Manchester.
