Job description

Eastbourne, East Sussex

St Wilfrid’s Hospice is a well-loved and respected local charity that provides end of life care to the people of Eastbourne and surrounding areas of East Sussex.

Our vision is for a community where people talk openly about dying, live well until the end of their life and where nobody dies alone, afraid or in pain. With a paid workforce of 200+ and over 500 volunteers, we support over 1,500 people at the end of their lives, plus those close to them, with person-centred support for their physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Our annual turnover is c.£9m. We are rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

We will be refreshing our strategy in 2022 and aim to enhance the care and support we provide, so that we reach more people and that our services are fully inclusive of all in our community. As a result of some recent retirements, we are looking for up to three people to join our current board of nine trustees. We seek individuals who are forward-thinking, fair-minded and committed to collective decision-making and accountability.

Ideally, you will have experience or understanding of governance in charities. You must also be able to commit to the values of the hospice (Compassionate, Professional, Progressive and Respectful) and be available to attend evening board and subcommittee meetings, an annual awayday and some fundraising events.

We are particularly looking for people with a background and experience in the following areas:-

- Accountancy/other financial expertise
- Clinical services delivery, commissioning and/or governance (particularly frailty/end of life/elderly care)
- IT/digital strategy to enhance service delivery and/or communications

We very much welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, including disabled candidates, Black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) candidates, LGBTQ+ as well as non-binary candidates and those who have experienced mental health issues.

We will offer full induction training for those selected.

These roles are not remunerated but we will pay for travel and related expenses.

If you wish to apply, press the 'Apply for this job now', complete and return an application form along with a CV.

If you would like to know more, please visit our website where you will find information about the role and can see the profiles of our current Trustees.

The closing date for applications is Friday 20th May and interviews will be held in person at the hospice on 30th May and 7th June.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
