Job description

We’re inviting people to join our lively and dedicated committee. As a trustee or committee member, you’d be joining a multifaith board in steering our charity’s work to support disadvantaged local groups. Inspired by Buddhist values, our projects include:

  • Touching Safe Ground: supporting newly-arrived refugee and migrant women, partnering with the Mission Practice GP surgery to provide gentle yoga integrated with English language learning.
  • Take Back Your Life: a mindfulness-based pain management programme for people with chronic pain and illness.
  • Wellbeing for Over 60s: using mindfulness and social connection to offer group support to those at risk of loneliness and isolation.

As a trustee or committee member you’ll help to shape and develop GCP’s work in the community, supporting the health and wellbeing of some of the most isolated and deprived residents in Tower Hamlets. Your contribution in these roles is vital to our ability to relieve suffering in the local community.

What does the role offer?

This is a chance to put your values into action alongside others led by those same values. It’s also an opportunity to develop your skills and experience, learn more about how charities function, and access relevant training. Any travel expenses will be reimbursed.

What’s the commitment?

To attend four evening committee meetings per year, the annual AGM, and to support the charity on occasional projects, in line with your particular experience. In practice, around 3-5 hours per month. Meetings take place in Bethnal Green, East London, and last two hours.

What skills and qualities do I need?

We’re particularly seeking people with experience in fundraising (donations, legacy, corporate, strategy), finance and charity management, operations and governance. But don’t be put off if you don’t have experience on a charity board – the most essential qualities are a connection with our values and the desire to support transformational local projects. Tower Hamlets is an ethnically diverse borough, are committed to inclusivity and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.

More about Globe Community Project

Founded by members of the Triratna Buddhist community in 2004 to serve local residents, GCP supports connection and compassion in the heart of our community. Our projects connect people and communities facing similar challenges to promote their own and others’ wellbeing, so everyone can lead more connected and positive lives. We work with people who have become isolated by chronic pain and illness, older age, loneliness, trauma, or language and cultural barriers. Stepping into the gap between government institutions and traditional community responses, we work in and around Tower Hamlets to find creative responses to local needs.
