About Us:
Been There is a national charity revolutionising mental health support. We connect people struggling with a debilitating body image issue or eating disorder (Peers) with people who have lived experience of similar issues (Peer-Supports).
Our bespoke online service provides a free, safe and accessible space for Peers to share their experiences with someone who has a deep personal understanding of the journey they are going through – someone who has truly ‘been there’ too.
We are at a pivotal stage in our development and are seeking a dynamic and experienced Interim CEO to lead us through a crucial growth period during our CEO’s maternity leave.
For more information about the charity please see recruitment pack.
The Role:
We are pleased to offer a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional and experienced individual to take on a key leadership role as Interim CEO at Been There, providing maternity cover for our current Chief Executive.
This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a rapidly growing charity at a critical stage of its development. We need someone with vision, drive, and a commitment to ensuring Been There continues to make a meaningful impact whilst our CEO is away.
This is an exciting time to step into a small but mighty charity that is making a real impact through lived-experience mentoring. We are at a pivotal moment in our journey, and this next phase is fundamental to our growth and long-term impact. We’re looking for a ROCKSTAR Interim CEO to hit the ground running and lead the way- driving forward our National Lottery-funded project, strengthening operations, and ensuring the continued success of our services.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, you will provide leadership across key areas, including:
- Fundraising
- Strategic partnerships
- Service and App development
- Service delivery
- Stakeholder engagement
- Recruiting and onboarding team
This role is not for someone who wants to sit back and maintain the status quo - we need an ambitious, hands-on leader who is ready to push the charity forward.
About the Person:
We are looking for a proven leader with experience in the charity sector, particularly in mental health, mentoring, or peer support services.
You will have a strong track record in strategy implementation, fundraising, and building relationships with funders, donors, and partners.
Most importantly, you will be a dynamic and inspiring ambassador for Been There, driving our growth while staying true to our core mission.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Proven leadership experience as a CEO or senior leader within the charity sector, ideally in mental health, peer support, or lived-experience mentoring.
- Strong background in safeguarding, GDPR, and governance, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical responsibilities.
- A fundraising expert with a track record of securing diverse income streams, building sustainable financial models, and cultivating relationships with funders and donors.
- Experience in recruitment, onboarding, and team development, fostering a strong, motivated, and high-performing team.
- A strategic thinker who is also hands-on, able to drive growth and innovation rather than just maintaining operations.
- Strong experience in stakeholder engagement, including working with trustees, funders, service users, volunteers, and external partners.
- Knowledge of the digital landscape and experience integrating tech solutions (e.g. app development) to enhance service accessibility and effectiveness.
- Experience in governance and compliance, working closely with a Board of Trustees to ensure effective oversight and decision-making.
- Comfortable working remotely, with the ability to travel occasionally for in-person trustee meetings in Southeast England. Able to get to Oxfordshire/Bucks/London regions to do handover with the current CEO
Key Personal Attributes:
- Passionate about mental health, body image and eating disorders support, and peer mentoring, with a strong commitment to Been There’s mission.
- Visionary leadership with the ability to inspire and empower staff, volunteers, and service users.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build trust, foster relationships, and advocate for the charity’s work.
- Resilient and proactive, with the initiative to take ownership of organisational performance and drive continuous improvement.
- High integrity, emotional intelligence, and humility, ensuring a people-first approach to leadership.
- Committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, embedding these principles into every aspect of leadership and service delivery.
