Job description

HARP is the leading charity tackling homelessness in the area of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, UK. Formed in 2002, it has grown rapidly over recent years and now employs just under 100 staff, has 120 active volunteers, helps over 1,100 people each year and accommodates 220 people every night who would otherwise be homeless. HARP is a registered Charity and Social Housing Provider, and a company limited by guarantee. It is governed by its Board of Trustees.

HARP (Homeless Action Resource Project) tackles homelessness via a full suite of services commencing with eviction prevention, with a comprehensive program designed to identify the root causes of an individual's homelessness and services aimed at overcoming them. Last year we served over 62,500 meals and worked with over 600 rough sleepers, helping many to return ultimately to full independence in the local community.

The present Honorary Treasurer has been a Trustee almost since the Charity's inception, and whilst wishing to continue to serve as a Trustee, now wishes to handover the role of Treasurer to a new person. HARP has grown to such a size (£4 million turnover) that we have identified that this role ideally now needs to be undertaken by a qualified accountant. An understanding of FRS102 is highly desirable, with knowledge and experience of the Charities SORP and/or Housing SORP would be advantageous. Previous experience as a Charity Trustee (or NED of a Housing Association) is desirable but not essential.

As is usual for Charity Trustees, this is an unpaid role. The Trustees are also the legal Directors of the charitable company. Monthly Trustee Board Meetings are scheduled for 5pm-7pm on the second Monday of each month in central Southend. The Treasurer chairs the Finance Sub-Committee which meets every other month, usually within business hours but this could be changed to evenings to suit an incoming Treasurer if required.

This is an exciting opportunity to help a successful, well respected and rapidly expanding Charity to continue to address homelessness across Southend - one of the key issues nationally as well as locally. Training and induction will be provided as required to the successful candidate.
Whilst not essential, many Trustees choose to attend a variety of events representing HARP, including fundraising functions, many of which take place in evenings and weekends. We also encourage Trustees to undertake job shadowing with staff, or "provider site visits" to help them to understand the Charity's work and to build relationships with staff and volunteers.
