Director of Community Shop
Location: Tankersley, South Yorkshire
Competitive salary and generous benefits package
Community Shop is the UK's first social supermarket, and with turnover now in excess of £1m we are placed in the top 15% of social enterprises in the UK. By using the knowledge and infrastructure of Company Shop – the UK’s largest redistributor of surplus food - and through working with our partners in the food industry, we have built an innovative social enterprise that is already serving four communities in South Yorkshire and London and is keen to expand across the UK.
Not only do we offer great food at deeply discounted prices to those who need it most, we use the revenue from food sales to help people gain confidence in their lives and create more cohesive and connected communities. We do this by providing access to professional and personal development programmes, to kick-start positive change in our member's lives. Each Community Shop has three interdependent spaces; a store, a development hub and a kitchen and social eating space. Each one serves to engage, inspire, build up and connect every member who comes through our doors.
Since opening our pilot store in December 2013, our successes include: the opening of three further Community Shops; a mention from The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger and Poverty in their Feeding Britain strategy with a recommendation to open a store in 12 regions across the UK; recognition by the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for “outstanding achievement” for our work; and in December 2017 Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty featured Community Shop on the 'Friday Night Feast', which has further raised our profile. We are now nicely positioned for the next phase in our journey, which will be to expand the model into new communities and continue our drive for innovation in working with communities who need us.
The Director of Community Shop reports to, and will work closely with, the Managing Director of Company Shop to devise and lead on the delivery of the future strategy for Community Shop. You will lead the growth of income and social impact, as well as ensure operational performance in all areas of our activity.
This is a complex leadership role that requires somebody who is passionate about achieving positive social impact with people and communities. You will need experience of operating at Board level within a social enterprise or charity, experience of fundraising and identifying funding opportunities, and be an exceptional networker who can build and maintain excellent relationships with a wide range of supporters and stakeholders.
