CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
ABOUT THE CHARITY
Dreams Come True is a national charity with a big heart and a clear charitable purpose. We exist to fulfil the dreams of children and young adults with serious and life-limiting conditions.
We are the only wish granting organisation that fulfils the dreams of children and young adults with such a wide range of medical conditions, locations and ages. We believe that because of this, we are answering an unmet need in the wish granting sector by allowing these two to 21-year-olds – who would usually otherwise be missed – a chance to have their dream transformed into a reality.
And that’s what makes us unique – we have a simple principle that we aim to help those that others can’t and in doing so, to place the Dreams Families at the heart of every decision, every action and at every opportunity. We are a charity that focuses on impact and making a positive difference to those we seek to help.
We received funding and have launched an innovative first-of-its-kind programme to operate in some of the UK’s hardest to reach communities and are currently scoping another equally exciting programme. These along with the renewed focus being given to marcomms, fundraising and systems evidence our desire to evolve and adapt.
In the past 24 months, our current Chair, along with the Chief Executive, has led a process that has transformed the charity into the focused and sustainable organisation we are today. There is no doubt that COVID-19 will change the charity landscape and mean there is a new norm – we are ready for the challenge, we have the liquidity to survive and we have the plans to bounce out the other side.
We are not complacent; we know we are a work in progress and most importantly we have the Trustees and staff team who are eager to improve outputs and are ready for the challenge.
The role of Chair of Dreams Come True is a special one – mentor, critical friend, supporter, advocate, facilitator and, above all, leader. Our values are Honesty, Empathy, Respect and Openness and as our culture evolves, these are the behaviours against which the softer side of our success will be judged.
Like any well-run charity, we have a frequently reviewed Risk Register, safeguarding training for all staff, volunteers and trustees, and we’re fully compliant with DBS and Health & Safety regulations and the Fundraising Regulator’s requirements. We also have the services of a highly qualified Medical Advisor to support our dream process.
THE ROLE OF CHAIR
We are looking for that special individual who can provide leadership to the organisation, the Board and the Chief Executive with style, compassion and flair. Without doubt, the role requires the levels of governance and oversight expected of a national charity but the key ingredient will be passion – passion for our cause, passion for our team and, above all, a passion for making a positive difference. The Chair is supported by a talented, diverse and active Board with a wide skill base.
The successful candidate will understand the charity landscape and be comfortable with the fiduciary requirements that carries, will have board level experience, a sound understanding of finances, be commercially savvy and ideally have experience of working with children and young adults (this is desirable but not essential).
Dreams Come True doesn’t want to be the biggest - it wants to be the most impactful charity of its type in the UK. So, if the challenge of leading us on the next stage of our journey excites, we would be delighted to hear from you.
There are four Trustee Board meetings a year, plus a strategy away day. These are usually held at our Head Office in Liphook (Hampshire) or in London. The Chair does not currently sit on any sub-committees.
The Chair will be expected to be in contact with the Chief Executive on a regular basis and occasionally more frequently. Please note that occasional attendance at events and functions around the UK is also a requirement, involving out of hours and overnight stays.
The post is unremunerated, though travel expenses will be covered.
