Job description

 Summary of Post

The Business Development Manager works as part of, and in partnership with, the Senior Management
Team in achieving the aims and objectives as set out in the organisation’s Business Plan and Funding
Strategy. The successful candidate will be responsible for achieving income generation targets, securing new business and funding, developing existing and new key partnerships, and supporting the strategic
direction of the organisation. They will need to have extensive experience in income generation, partnership development and stewardship, and a strategic mindset - and will be joining a fun, dynamic, forward-thinking and successful team!

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Income Generation

Income Generation

  • Sustaining existing funding for core services
  • Generating new business through contracts, grants, trusts & foundations and by capitalising on new and emerging opportunities
  • Bid writing
  • Working closely with the Head of Operations & Contracts on identifying, applying and securing commissioned and contracted work, and general support of contract management
  • Reporting and monitoring on progress towards income generation targets and KPIs - at both Senior Management Team and Board level
  • Working closely with colleagues who share a remit on income generation, including the CEO and the Business Support Manager
  • Supporting the CEO on philanthropy strategy
  • Working with the Business Support Manager (finance lead) to ensure all income is properly recorded and tracked

Partnerships, Networking and Stewardship

  • Managing key partnerships, relationships and stakeholders
  • Engaging new corporate partnerships to support service delivery (e.g. mock interviews, employer encounters), work pathways for beneficiaries, and organisational business development support
  • Targeted networking for new business opportunities
  • Implementing the organisation’s Major Events Strategy to align closely to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to benefit from potential beneficiary outcomes, new business and income generation
  • Working closely with the Operations Manager (who will lead on operational element of partnerships)

Leadership and Management

  • Member of, and working with, the Senior Management Team and the Board of Trustees
  • Lead of the ‘Funding’ committee, and member of other committees
  • Potential line management in the future

Strategy

  • Lead the ‘Funding Strategy’ and other sub-strategies in support of this
  • Work closely with the CEO to provide strategic overview and direction for all of the organisation’s work
  • Work closely with other members of the SMT contributing to the development of the charity’s overall strategic plan

General

  • Responsibility for completing all necessary paperwork requirements
  • Keeping up-to-date with labour market information, legislation, sector news, sport for development landscape, professional and academic developments
  • Undertake any task that may be requested from time to time that may be consistent with the nature and scope of the post

Person Specification

Personal Characteristics

The Business Development Manager is a dynamic, personable individual, who works well in a growing, changing and targeted environment, whilst upholding the Values of S4L. They will be confident and professional, with the ability to motivate and inspire those around them. The Business Development Manager is a good communicator at all levels and can work effectively both internally (colleagues, line manager, trustees etc.) and externally (corporate partners, funders, stakeholders etc.). As a growing organisation, S4L requires staff who are willing to accept change and are committed to their personal development. There will be opportunities to work on tasks and projects that fall outside of the job description. The Business Development Manager will be committed to supporting the overall Business Plan and aims and objectives of the organisation.

Experience

Track record of securing significant income generation and investment

Experience of identifying new income streams

Experience of working towards challenging KPIs and targets

Experience of bid writing for grants and trusts & foundations 

Experience of bidding for commissioned and contract work

Demonstrable experience of working at c.£1m+ turnover, and securing six figure bids from grants and contracts

Experience of corporate engagement

Demonstrable depth of experience in partnership management

Knowledge and Understanding

Knowledge and understanding of the third sector

Knowledge and understanding of the regional and national funding landscape

An understanding of the barriers that face S4L beneficiaries

Knowledge and understanding of the sport sector is desirable (but not essential)

Skills and Abilities

Excellent writing skills

High level of professionalism

Strong research and analytical skills

The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to be fully competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite

The ability to organise and be self-motivated

A willingness to undertake continuous personal and professional development

To have a confident and calm approach to problems and an ability to use initiative in funding solutions

Qualifications

Appropriate undergraduate degree / diploma or higher

Qualifications in income generation / bid writing / Leadership & Management is desirable (but not essential)
