About us

 POhWER was established in 1996 by our founders all of whom had disabilities and were fighting social injustice and challenges in their lives. POhWER still operates with these roots at the heart of everything it does; supporting marginalised, vulnerable and socially excluded people through its charitable work. Giving people a voice – and making sure it’s heard – is something POhWER does every day. We’re all about promoting equality, challenging unfairness and giving disadvantaged and vulnerable people access to high quality information, advice and advocacy services. We look at everyone who needs a helping hand through our services, to lead independent lives and to uphold their rights.

Given POhWER’s broad reach, it is not possible to always use language that perfectly describes every single one of the lived experiences that our beneficiaries identify or relate with. In the present day, the Charity not only focuses on people living with mental health, impairment or disability but also anyone who benefits from advocacy and the helping hand it provides. The lived experiences and circumstances covered are too wide to be able to use a set of vocabulary that applies to everyone’s circumstances.

There is no “typical” POhWER beneficiary.

The Role of a Trustee

  • to contribute actively to the Trustee Board’s role in helping setting and achieving the overall strategy, goals and targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets;
  • to exercise trusteeship of the values of POhWER;
  • to achieve a good balance between collaboration and challenge;
  • to take personal and collective responsibility as a trustee to ensure that the organisation is safeguarding it’s beneficiaries and comply with the organisation’s safeguarding policies;
  • to ensure that POhWER uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives;
  • to ensure that POhWER complies with its Articles, charity law, company law, or any other relevant regulation or legislation and pursues its charitable objectives in accordance with best practice, standards and propriety;
  • to comply with the Charity Commission Governance Code;
  • uphold high standards of integrity and probity, both personally and in ensuring POhWER aspires to the highest standards in all its dealings, internally and externally;
  • to ensure strict confidentiality of all governance matters;
  • to be able to give enough time and thought to the role of trustee eg preparing for, attending and actively participating in all meetings of the Trustees;
  • to abide by the Nolan Principles of public life Key attributes specific to this recruitment POhWER is seeking particular knowledge, expertise or experience the following areas:
  • Experience in the social care/advocacy sector with knowledge of Health and Social Care Commissioning.
  • Knowledge of HR, typically at executive or board level or in Employment Law; Terms of Appointment

 

Duration

  • The Term of Office is currently three years, renewable up to a maximum of six years.

 

Commitment

  • Typically averaging 1 day per month • Four Board meetings per annum and one/two strategic Trustee Away Days
  • Attending as a member of one of POhWER’s Board Committees which are held twice yearly. The Board Committees are Finance, Audit and Risk, Fundraising and Income Generation, People and finally Nominations
  • Attendance at the AGM
  • Undertaking of occasional projects as part of a time limited Task and Finish Group

 

Location

  • All meetings with the exception of AGM and Trustee Strategic Away Days are held remotely via electronic means
